Alive is a fitness and wellness app by Whitney Simmons. Whitney has a passion for empowering women to shape the best versions of themselves mentally and physically. She reached out to our team to collaborate on designing and building an app that would help people get into the best shape of their life and reach their fitness goals.
We needed to come up with a name and a visual foundation. Whitney has a popular saying "It's a beautiful day to be alive". We were listening to many women share their stories and thought there was no better name then Alive! We then wanted the app to represent Whitney and her amazing personality that so many have come to love. When we shared the visual vision with Whitney let's just say it was love at first sight.
The path to a fit, healthy life is a journey, not an overnight process. The journey section allows users to keep track of their progress by weight, photos, and a timeline of progress. Consistency is key so as the user continually hits their goals the app will reward them with achievements along the way!
The workout experience was the core part of the app. Our goal was to ensure it required no tutorial or explanation to begin exercising. On the flip side, we wanted the workout flow to be unique and stand out from other fitness apps. Through various iterations we found similarities between the playlist experience in our favorite music applications and the behavior one takes when performing their exercise routine.
We wanted to add fun little surprises in the app. Apple had just released dark mode abilities and we thought, why not?
Whitney created 2 custom programs specifically for Alive. We needed these to be as easy as possible to follow and remove as much guesswork as we could from the user. The app includes a weekly plan with a simple one-tap to start your daily workout.
We created videos for each exercise within the app so users could follow along with Whitney. We decided to shoot from 2 different angles with one version zoomed. This gave users a better idea of the technique then a single view. We then looped the video to keep file sizes smaller.
Whitney also has an ecommerce site where she sells merch. We wanted the brand to carry over from the app into that shopping experience. We completely overhauled the site and added a few pages to market and support the app.
We updated PDP’s for easier checkout and added the Alive style for a completely consistent and cohesive experience.
In just the first week of release, the app peaked at #4 in the health and fitness category in the app store. We also broke the top 100 in all categories. In that same week, we received over 3,000 reviews at a 4.8-star rating. Even better we read stories, watched YouTube videos, and read reviews about the wonderful impact the app has had on the amazing people who use it. Few things are better to hear than that.
